Mt.Difficulty Wines

Mt. Difficulty was established in New Zealand’s trendy Central Otago region in 1998 as a boutique winery by four Bannockburn vineyard owners, with the aim of making a super-premium Otago Pinot Noir. The Bannockburn soil with a mix of clays and gravels, ideal for viticulture, combined with the unique microclimate brought by the mountain itself is the perfect terroir for growing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling. After a few short years of success Mt. Difficulty is now recognised as one of the leading Pinot Noir producers of the region if not the whole country.

Chardonnay
Chardonnay

The grapes for this wine come from three estate vineyards; Long Gully, Mansons Farm and Templars Hill. The grapes were harvested cool and handled in an oxidative fashion. Barrel fermentation was completed at controlled temperatures. After malo-lactic fermentation, the wine was racked from the barrel and lightly fined and filtered before bottling. This Chardonnay is all about complexity, with mealy, vanilla, citrus and tropical fruit components. The palate explodes with ripe citrus characters moving onto the mid palate with an excellent creamy texture and weight from extended lees contact and barrel aging. A good grapefruit dominated finish complements the wine’s natural acidity.

Pinot Gris
Pinot Gris

The grapes for this wine come from four of this winery’s Bannockburn vineyards; Templars Hill, Long Gully, Bannockburn Bay and Ferris. The fruit was processed in a reductive manner and the wine was fermented cool to help maximize the varietal character. These techniques were also used to help enhance the complexity and textural aspects of the wine. Starting with fruity aromas of peach and nectarine, the palate is full and well textured, showing firm backbone. This creamy and fleshy wine has an impressive tropical finish.

Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir

The grapes for this wine come from Mt. Difficulty’s estate Bannockburn vineyards. The majority of the grapes were de-stemmed only; a reasonable proportion of the lots contained whole clusters. When the wine tasted in harmony, it was pressed off to barrel where it resided on full lees for 11 months. This wine always displays great balance and concentration. Red fruits of the forest along with blackberry dominate the aroma, these are underpinned by savory dried herb and licorice. The wine has a sweet concentrated front palate, which displays these same characters in abundance; the mid palate is fleshy and well textured. The wine finishes with a lovely combination of tannins and fruit.

Roaring Meg Pinot Noir
Roaring Meg Pinot Noir

The grapes for this wine come from selected premium Central Otago vineyards. The fruit was all de-stemmed to enhance the natural fruit characters of Central Otago. This wine exhibits a lovely mix of red and black berry fruits with further complexity gained from the spiciness of the oak. Tannins rise gracefully out of the mid-palate to finish the wine; these are balanced by the wine’s acidity and fruit, to produce a long fruit driven finish. Roaring Meg is recognised as one of the greatest bargains in premium Otago Pinot Noir.

Pipeclay Terrace Pinot Noir
Pipeclay Terrace Pinot Noir

The fruit for this wine was harvested from the winery’s Pipeclay Terrace vineyard. The fruit is mainly de-stemmed with one of the three ferments having 20% whole cluster. This is a single vineyard wine created to show specific attributes of the vineyard and the vintage. The production quantity is very limited and is produced only in the very top vintages. This wine shows concentrated black cherry and blackberry aromas alongside licorice and spice. The palate displays a strong fruit entry, which moves into a rich and sensuous mid-palate and it finishes strongly with a combination of fruit and finely grained tannin.

Long Gully Pinot Noir
Long Gully Pinot Noir

The fruit for this wine was harvested from Mt. Difficulty’s Long Gully vineyard. The majority of the fruit was de-stemmed, 20% of the final wine had 25% whole clusters during fermentation. Mt. Difficulty’s Single Vineyard Pinot Noir wines have been created to show specific attributes of each vineyard and vintage and the Long Gully has always displayed classic red forest berry characters which really shine through the wine.
