Domaine Thenard

Domaine Thenard was founded to mark the occasion of marriage of Paul Thenard into the Yvon family, a family with a long history in Givry. The domaine comprises a total area of 21.5 hectares, gathering 10 different appellations. They also own 2 blocks in the 7.9 hectare (4 hectares on the Puligny side and 3.9 on the Chassagne side) Montrachet vineyard on the Chassage side, which extend over 1.83 hectares. The first parcels of Givry were bought in 1760 and the Montrachet plot was bought in 1872. The current store house representative is Jean-Baptiste Bordeaux Montrieux and his son. Born in Chalon sur Saone in 1959, Jean-Baptiste studied agriculture and winemaking, then worked at Domaine Thenard while working as General Manager of Remoissenet P&F from 1987 to 2005.

The 2.34 hectare area is a mixture of clay and lime soil. Both stainless-steel tanks and oak barrels are used in the fermentation process. It has the potential for another 5-7 years of aging. This is a sensual and complex wine with a fleshy texture and aroma of fruits and dried flowers. It is a chardonnay full of the fragrance of southern Bourgogne.

With a southerly exposure, this 3.22 hectare vineyard is a mix of clay and lime. Oak barrels are used in fermentation bringing about soft and subtle tannins. The “Cellier aux Moines” parcel is very old with records dating back to 1258. With a terrific currant color, and a rich, intense fruit bouquet with aromas of ripe dark berries, this Pinot Noir has lots of sweet, pure fruit on the palate. It is a beautifully balanced, velvety wine that offers good power, backend persistence and a lingering finish. This is a wine that can be enjoyed after a long aging period.

The grapes for this wine are handpicked from vines on a 1.83 hectare clay and lime vineyard. The wine is aged in oak barrels, 50% new, for 18 months before fining and light filtering is carried out. This Chardonnay is a lovely bright color with freshness on the palate and flavors of pear and citrus. It has good concentration and excellent minerality. Fine and lively, the level of concentration and richness increases with time. This wine can be aged for up to 12 years.

The strong calcific soil of these parcels provide an underlay of soil for the vineyard that includes silicon dioxide, lime and iron oxide. Bought in 1872, the vineyard is 250-270 meters above sea level and extends over 10% of the slope with a south, south-easterly aspect. The conditions are such that the grapes do not suffer from damage, even in very dry years or very humid years. Grapes are handpicked and fermented in 100% new barrels, then aged in oak for 18 months. This wine has rich, luxuriant aromas of honeysuckle and ample wood spice followed by forward yet elegant flavors that are impressively concentrated. It is a nicely complex, powerful, and elegant wine: lovely and round, with a silky but intense palate impression, this is truly a great wine and one of the greatest white wines in the world.
