Pierre Gonon

The name Gonon has been a mainstay in the town of Mauves for many, many years prior to the creation of the appellation of Saint Joseph. Pierre Gonon was far sighted in his commitment to white wine and planted Marsanne in 1958, soon after the appellation was born. Today, sons Jean and Pierre, now in full command of the winery, have some impressive older vine plants on the most renowned site for white wine in the appellation, Les Oliviers, thanks to their father. The Gonon brothers work the family’s 9 hectares of vineyards consisting of 7 hectares of Syrah and 2 hectares of Marsanne and Roussanne planted in the Les Oliviers parcel. They uphold the best virtues of the appellation system and draw from all of their historic parcels, each lending a distinct character to craft only a single white and a single red Saint Joseph cuvee.

Coming exclusively from the Syrah vine, this wine is aged in large casks and barrels for 14 to 16 months before being bottled without filtration. This is a tannic wine even in its youth, but it also benefits by waiting some years to allow those tannins to become silkier and to nurture its more complex aromas. This bright, intense garnet colored wine has a savory bouquet of game, red and black fruits intermingled with olives, spice and herbaceous notes. The palate has wonderfully rich fruit that is exceptionally pure and coupled with a juicy acidity. It has an intense backbone of iron minerality which surely originates from the heavily granitic soils upon which the vines rest. The finish lingers and shows great complexity already at this young age.

Using the vines Roussanne and Marsanne, each contributes a certain character to the final assemblage. The Roussanne gives roundness and perfume, whereas the Marsanne offers structure and length to the palate. The wine is not filtered, which leaves a light, natural sediment in the bottle. It is a wine of expansive richness and delicate finesse with aromas of honeysuckle, orange marmalade and black licorice. With warm flavors of red apple, honey and dusty oak on the palate, this dry but rich full-bodied wine finishes with lovely acidity and great persistence.
