Tony Coltrin brings more than 35 years of winemaking experience to his role as Director of Winemaking, which includes making wines for Hangtime. He grew up in St. Helena, working and playing in the vineyards, and one day the grandfather of one of his closest friends suggested Tony work a harvest at Robert Mondavi Winery. In 1973, Robert Mondavi Winery was leading the industry in innovative practices. The harvest experience peaked Tony’s interest and turned into a 30-year-long career with Robert and Michael Mondavi that went from dragging hoses and shoveling fermenters in the cellar to becoming Cellarmaster and then Winemaker. When the company sold, Tony joined Michael Mondavi and his son Rob in making the fine wines of Folio. ”Over the years I have come to believe that great wine is not only a reflection of soil, climate, and grape varieties, but equally an intimate expression of the passion of the people behind it,” says Tony. “If the grapes are the heart of a wine…the people are its soul.” Why “Hangtime”? We named our wine after a key part of grape growing -the amount of time grapes spend hanging on the vines. The longer the time on the vine, the more concentrated the fruit character, resulting in wines of distinctive, delicious varietal expression. Winemaker Tony Coltrin works hand-in-hand with nature to decide exactly how many days on the vine grapes need for perfect ripening.

Hangtime Chardonnay

Nestled against the cool Central Coast’s Santa Lucia Mountains, the Arroyo Seco AVA claims one of California’s longest grape-growing seasons. Chardonnay grapes can take their time ripening, and Arroyo Seco’s alluvial, gravelly and sandy loam soils, coupled with cool breezes from Monterey Bay, offer optimal growing conditions for it. This results in the slow, steady development of pure fruit balanced by natural acidity. We enhance the character of these grapes by fermenting the wine in oak barrels, with a simultaneous malolactic fermentation, to add a layer of creaminess and beautiful notes of spice and toast. Sumptuous tropical aromas of coconut and lime lead to layers of apple and melon flavors punctuated by a bright zip of acidity on the finish that melts into creaminess. Pair with salmon, crab cakes, and poultry, sit back, and enjoy a little hang time of your own!

Hangtime Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is often considered the most finicky of wines - that’s why we give ours tender loving care. We source this wine from select California vineyards that allow grapes to ripen slowly, producing lovely delicate, intriguing fruit character. Hangtime California Pinot Noir has vivid red fruit with hints of spice, a lithe texture, and graceful length on the palate.
