Joseph Phelps Vineyards

Joseph Phelps, who spent his early years as a working member of a farm family, founded the winery and vineyards which bears his name in 1972. This carefully brought up vineyard, situated in Spring Valley near St. Helena, is surrounded by undulating cattle farms, oak forests and abundant nature. Long known for his innovative spirit and passion for quality, Joseph Phelps pioneered a number of “firsts” in the early years of the winery. The 1974 Insignia, released in the spring of 1978, was the first Bordeaux-style blend produced in California under a proprietary label. Varietals produced at Phelps include Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Backus Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and the Insignia which due to its smooth mellowness and deep flavors, is recognised as one of the top icon wines from the Napa region.

Freestone Pinot Noir
Freestone Pinot Noir

Using 100% Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir from estate vineyards: Freestone and Quarter Moon, the wine is aged for 15 months in 55% new and 45% two to three year-old French barrels. Whole berries were used in each tank with some whole cluster additions to the fermentations in order to add to the silky texture and accentuate the spicy characteristics that are native to the cool Freestone region. Grapes were selected in groups with the best balance of tannin, flavor concentration, aroma and acidity. The resulting blend offers hints of sandalwood, wild blackberry and balsamic reduction, dried tea leaves, and a melange of Indian spices. This wine is serious, yet restrained, and has a backbone of natural acidity, tannin and minerality to provide the structure necessary for aging.

Freestone Chardonnay
Freestone Chardonnay

Using 100% estate-grown Chardonnay from Freestone Vineyards, this wine is aged for 15 months in French oak barrels (70% new, 30% one-to two-year old barrels) before bottling. The first impression on the nose is cool, with mineral and smoky notes that suggest foggy mornings and rich soil. The palate offers an oily, yet crisp texture with underlying layers of rock, earth and slow-toasted wood, followed by concentrated nectar of stone fruits and a long, steely finish. This Chardonnay blend expresses both the philosophy of winemaking and the essence of the vineyards at Freestone : through minimal interference and gentle handling, the vital character of the site is allowed to shine through.

Fogdog Pinot Noir
Fogdog Pinot Noir

Fruit for this wine is sourced form all three vineyards; Freestone, Ferguson and Quarter Moon. The long growing season for the grapes allows for slow development of tannins and flavors, bringing structure and complexity to the wine. The high quality of the grapes provides many opportunities to use new winemaking techniques such as maximizing whole berries and incorporating a small number of whole clusters into some of the fermentations. This adds the spicy nuances native to the terroir of this cool region. This wine has complex aromas of blackcurrant, sour cherries, black tea and asian spices. The attack is rich and sweet with condensed flavors of wild strawberries, plum, and blackberry liqueur. The backbone of acid, minerality and smooth tannins fill the mouth, bringing about a long, persistent finish with remaining spice flavors.

Fogdog Chardonnay

Grapes for this Chardonnay are all from the Phelps’ Freestone vineyard. The wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels (50% new, 50% 1-2 year old barrels). Although these vines are young, they are able to produce just enough fruit to craft this delicious, fragrant wine. This chardonnay is a beautiful representation of the characteristics unique to this region with its rich flavors of lemon zest, fig and spice. The mineral characters give a pleasant, rounded structure and concentration with a long-lasting finish. It is suggested that the wine be decanted prior to serving.
