Joseph Phelps Vineyards

Joseph Phelps, who spent his early years as a working member of a farm family, founded the winery and vineyards which bears his name in 1972. This carefully brought up vineyard, situated in Spring Valley near St. Helena, is surrounded by undulating cattle farms, oak forests and abundant nature. Long known for his innovative spirit and passion for quality, Joseph Phelps pioneered a number of “firsts” in the early years of the winery. The 1974 Insignia, released in the spring of 1978, was the first Bordeaux-style blend produced in California under a proprietary label. Varietals produced at Phelps include Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Backus Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and the Insignia which due to its smooth mellowness and deep flavors, is recognised as one of the top icon wines from the Napa region.

This Cabernet Sauvignon that has been produced since 1970, has received high appraisal for being the second coming of Insignia. Aged in a combination of new French and American oak barrels (40%) and 2 to 4 year old French and American oak (60%) before being blended and bottled, this wine is crimson and dark plum color in the glass. Dark and concentrated, it is smooth-textured, supple and harmonious, with subtle layers of currant, spice, herb, anise and light cedary oak, ending with a graceful mix of ripe fruit and fine-grained tannins. It is round and silky with a pleasingly long finish.
