Kilikanoon 

Killikanoon has established itself as one of the real superstars of the Clare Valley. Owner and head of winemaking, Kevin Mitchell has had winemaking experience in many international and domestic wineries ranging from Krondorf, d’Arenberg, Kingston Estate and Orlando to BRL Hardy, Kendal Jackson and Willamette Valley (USA). In 1998 he released the first 2 wines under the Kilikanoon name. The Mitchell family has been growing grapes in the Clare Valley for more than 30 years and in 1997 Kevin purchased the facility known as Kilikanoon. The main grape varieties, Shiraz, Riesling and Cabernet were planted on Mort’s Block and Block Road vineyards in the Leasingham area of Clare Valley 25 years ago giving them some of the oldest vines in the region.

Kilikanoon, through winemaker Kevin Mitchell is partnering Maison Greffe, The only Vouvray gold medallist in the 2007 Challenge International du Vin in the production of a single vintage, single varietal (Pineau de la Loire/Chenin Blanc) Methode Traditionelle sparkling wine. 80 year-old vines give special character to this wine, made in the same way as those of the more famous Champagne. Vouvray is one of France’s oldest wine-producing regions with a history dating back to Roman times. Elegant and fresh, with aromas of pears and apples and zesty citrus flavors.

The Lackey
The Lackey

Australian Shiraz has long been considered the workhorse of the Australian wine industry. Its character, well defined by this hard working 'Lackey', of a wine punching well above its weight. Kilikanoon has selected premium parcels of Shiraz fruit from various regions of South Australia to craft a wine of outstanding presence and refinement. The Lackey emphasizes the ripe, classic, South Australian Shiraz grape aged in old oak and bottled with no fining or filtration. Deep, rich, full-bodied, and elegant, it reveals plenty of berry fruit, chocolate, pepper, and new saddle leather characteristics.

The Lackey Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon has long been one of the most important and hardworking varieties grown in Australia, its strength and character so well defined by this ‘Lackey’ Cabernet, that punches so well above its weight.
Nose -  lifted notes of red cherries, licorice and coffee leaf, well supported by quality oak char
Palate -  a palate brimming full of fresh berries and licorice flavours, nicely weighted by French oak and fine grained tannins that provide excellent length and complexity.

The Lackey Riesling

Pale straw in color with youthful green tints and brilliant clarity, this is a classic Clare Valley Riesling. On the nose, this Riesling is all lemons and limes with a hint of seductive perfume. On the palate, fresh lemons and limes are perfectly balanced with crisp, natural acidity and a long lasting refreshing finish.

The Lackey Chardonnay
The Lackey Chardonnay

Chardonnay has been the most widely planted and hardest working premium white varietal in Australia for many years now. Its well defined character fits perfectly alongside its other Lackey sibling and it punches well above its weight. Premium parcels of Chardonnay were specially sourced from various regions of South Australia to craft a wine of outstanding presence and refinement. Brilliant straw color with green tints and outstanding clarity. Lifted fruity notes of ripe peach and melons predominate. The palate is richly varietal with a crisp acid backbone and finish, matching precisely the sweet melon, fig and peachy fruits.

Killerman’s Run Cabernet Sauvignon
Killerman’s Run Cabernet Sauvignon

A classic Cabernet style. The characteristics of the grapes are evident in the abundant fruitiness. The concept behind the Killerman’s Run series was to produce a wine from the best area in South Australia that was a good balance of quality and price. This wine reflects this philosophy beautifully. Harvesting is done completely by hand and the wine is aged in small old and new barrels for 2 years. This Cabernet Sauvignon is inky red in color with purple hues. Aromas of sweet berry fruits and spicy French oak characters feature on the nose. On the palate, sweet berry fruits and hints of leafy tobacco combine to create a smooth, seamless palate, further enhanced by the supportive oak characters and fine tannins on the finish.

Killerman’s Run Shiraz
Killerman’s Run Shiraz

Outstanding wine with rich and intense fruitiness leaving a long palate. Perfect when enjoyed with meals. Only the best grapes are chosen from a tiny vineyard in South Australia, vinified in a traditional style, aged for 24 months in small French and American oak barrels then carefully blended and bottled without filtering.. It is bright, brick red in color with crimson tints. Ripe, bold and lifted Shiraz flavors dominate on the nose. Balanced and lengthened on the palate. A sweet mid palate, soft tannins and warmth of character have created a wine with both power and finesse.

Kilikanoon ‘Mort’s Block’ Riesling
Kilikanoon ‘Mort’s Block’ Riesling

The grapes used for this riesling were sourced from the famous “Mort’s Block” vineyard in the Watervale region of the Clare Valley. The heavy soil consists of a Terra-Rossa (reddy-brown colored) loam layer on a layer of limestone. The climate is classic Mediterranean with rain fall concentrated in the months between May and October. Harvest yield is 3 to 3.5 tonnes per acre and takes place at the end of March when the flavor of the grape, the balance between the acidity and sugar is at its peak. Mort’s Block Riesling is pale straw in color with distinct green tints. Intense aromas of limes and lemons dominate with underlying floral and perfumed notes. The wine is dry with a crisp acid balance and a lingering finish.

Kilikanoon Reserve Riesling
Kilikanoon Reserve Riesling

Half of the grapes for the Reserve Riesling are sourced from the premium vineyard, “Mort’s Block”, and the other half are from “Carlisle” situated in Watervale in the Clare Valley. No irrigation is carried out at all so the 45 year old vines can bear top quality grapes. Harvesting is carried out under traditional management with pruning done by hand. Exhibits impressive green apple and grapefruit notes intermixed with stone fruits, and presented in a dry, austere style.

Kilikanoon ‘Block’s Road’ Cabernet Sauvignon

The Blocks Road represents Kilikanoon’s pinnacle Cabernet Sauvignon selection. The majority of fruit for this wine was sourced from the Kilikanoon estate in the Leasingham sub region of the Clare Valley. Aged in 300 liter French hogshead and bottled unfiltered and unrefined. It has blueberry, acacia flower, blackberry and creme de cassis characteristics. This full-bodied and rich Cabernet Sauvignon is described as having floral and blueberry aromas that jump from the glass.

The grapes for this wine are from 4 vineyards in the Leasingham sub region of the Clare Valley. The grapes are crushed using a gentle basket press. The wine is aged in French oak and American oak hogshead barrels for 24 months then carefully blended and bottled. This dense, plum/ purple hued, full-bodied Shiraz has a gorgeous texture as well as good opulence, vibrancy and definition.

Kilikanoon’s flagship Clare Valley wine, the Oracle, was mostly sourced from the dry grown Mort’s Block vineyard located is in the Leasingham district of the valley. Traditional methods of vinification were used throughout the wine making process, fermentation taking place in small open vats and gently processed through a basket press. The wine is matured in 240 liter French oak hoghead barrels for 24 months before careful blending and bottling. It is an intense crimson red with youthful purple hues. Aromas of lifted sweet plum and berry fruits with hints of coffee, chocolate, and spicy French oak. The palate is richly textured and flavored with the natural acidity and subtle oak characters providing length and complexity.

Attunga 1865 Shiraz
Attunga 1865 Shiraz

The Attunga 1865 Shiraz is perhaps Kilikanoon’s most special wine. Grapes are sourced from about 900 individual vines, planted in the early 1860s in the Leasingham subdistrict of the Clare Valley and still producing tiny quantities of very complex fruit. The vines are tended with loving care to ensure their continued good health. This wine spent 25 months in 100% new French oak hogsheads and was bottled un-fined and unfiltered. Opaque purple/black in color, it reveals an ethereal bouquet of crushed rocks, acacia flowers, espresso, mocha, black cherry, and blackberry. This leads to a powerful, intense, yery elegant wine with a very long, seamless finish.
