Kumeu River


Kumeu River Wines was established in 1944 when Mick and Kate Brajkovich first came to the small country settlement of Kumeu, about 20 km northwest of Auckland City.
The family had migrated to New Zealand in 1938 from Dalmatia, the coastal part of Croatia. They came from a village called Zivogosce, not far from the town of Makarska.
Mick Brajkovich died in 1949, but son Mate continued to tend the vines, make the wine and build the reputation of this fledgling wine company. The 1980s brought great changes and a move towards high quality table wines made from varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Merlot which were produced from newly developed vineyards in Kumeu.
At Kumeu River Wines the winemaking philosophy is simple; to endeavour to grow grapes of the highest standard and then treat them with respect when turned into wine.
In this way the potential quality is maximized, and the wines produced are truly representative of the land. To this end the vineyards are trained on the “Lyre” trellis to optimize their exposure to light and therefore the ripeness of the grapes.
Yields are kept low to improve the concentration of aromas and flavors in the grapes, and all of the grapes are harvested by hand.
The white grapes are all whole-bunch pressed, which is time-consuming but gives the best quality results.
The reds are destemmed and crushed gently before being transferred to fermentation tanks. No yeasts are added, only the indigenous yeasts that are present in the vineyard are used to conduct fermentations.

This wine was fermented 1/3 French oak barriques, and 2/3 in stainless steel tanks to allow emphasis on the ripe peach and melon aromas of the Chardonnay fruit. This Village Chardonnay features very attractive lifted fruit aromas, along with a touch of nuttiness: the hint of hazelnut that is so typical of Chardonnay. The palate also shows a nice peachy ripeness along with a crisp flinty character that gives the wine a refreshing cleansing quality. This wine is perfect to drink with fish and shellfish.

Kumeu River Pinot Gris
Kumeu River Pinot Gris

This is certainly a very layered and complex Pinot Gris. The indigenous yeast fermentation took place in tanks over an extended period, in conjunction with a partial malo-lactic fermentation. The 10 grams per litre of residual sugar is hardly noticeable due to the concentration of flavor and the textural richness that this wine displays. The aromas have typical peach and stone fruit notes tinged with the floral spiciness that we have come to expect from Pinot Gris. On the palate the wine is rich and complex with lovely length of flavor.

Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay

Kumeu River Chardonnay is drawn from six different vineyard sites in the Kumeu Region. Only the very best grapes from these vineyards are selected for the Kumeu River Estate label.
This Estate Chardonnay is ripe, rich and beautifully concentrated. The beautiful peach and hazelnut aromas along with the rich silky texture are distinct characteristics that can be expected from this wine.

Kumeu River Coddington Chardonnay
Kumeu River Coddington Chardonnay

The ripeness of the this vintage really shows through in this wine from the Coddington vineyard where the highest level of maturity is often achieved. The wine shows the typical ripe peach fruit expected from this site and with this vintage there is even more depth and structure in the wine. The palate is forward with a luxurious creamy texture and lovely balancing acidity. This wine, while delicious in its youth, will benefit from a period of bottle maturation of two to four years.

Kumeu River Hunting Hill Chardonnay

This Chardonnay has a particularly delightful aroma of pure fruit and flowers. It is a character that is similar to the neighbouring Mate’s Vineyard with its distinctive floral notes and restrained elegance. The Hunting Hill site gives a purity of character that, in its youth, displays a tight and crisp palate which needs some bottle age to reveal the power and concentration that lies beneath the surface. As with Mate’s Vineyard, this wine will improve with bottle age for 4 to 6 years.

The vines of Mate’s Vineyard are maturing nicely at 18 years and this is the only vineyard left planted with the Mendoza clone. The vine age and the distinctiveness of this clone help give Mate’s Vineyard its unique character. This vineyard has always displayed a lifted fruit aroma with distinct minerality and this vintage is arguably the finest expression seen from this site. At this stage is quite closed but undeniably complex and concentrated. This will evolve beautifully over the next 6-8 years.
