Majella

Majella was started in 1968 by the Lynn Family who have been residents of the Penola Coonawarra district for over 4 generations. It is situated at the eastern edge region of Coonawarra famous for its terra rossa (red earth). In the 1980s they sold their first grapes to Wynn’s Coonawarra estate, famous for “John Riddock”, and this relationship has continued for over 20 years. Currently, there are 60 hectares under vine and because most of the vines were planted between 1968 and 1974, they yield top-class premium grapes. Since releasing their first own label Shiraz in 1991, the winery has continued to receive triumphant appraisals and Majella has become one of the most commended wineries in Australia.

The Musician
The Musician

An exceptional wine at the price: vibrant, unmistakably Coonawarra to smell and taste, bursting with flavors of blackcurrant, mulberry and herbs, and fine, elegant and juicy in the mouth. The wine is quite low in oak, with just a smidge of vanillin showing faintly on the mid palate, but otherwise the brambly, blackcurrant flavors demand all the attention. Fine silky tannins integrate with the fruit and minimal oak treatment to produce an approachable well rounded wine with an extended length. Quite a complex wine. Drink now but it should age beautifully for 3 - 5 years. The label design is a photo of the owner’s son Matthew who passed away in a car accident at the young age of 20. Matthew was a talented guitarist and this wine is dedicated to him.

Shiraz
Shiraz

The Majella Shiraz first appeared in 1991 and has since acquired a reputation as being one of Coonawarra’s finest. Deep, dark purple in color, the nose is spicy with hints of cherry, dark chocolate and cedary oak. The wine has a robust palate showing great berry characters with hints of cloves, cinnamon, chocolate and black pepper. The tannins are quite soft and complement the long, lingering finish. As ever, the fermentation was completed in 300 liter barrels and the wine was then aged for a further 22 months in predominately American oak. It is a great example of Coonawarra Shiraz at its very best. Aging potential of 8 - 10 years plus.

Cabernet Sauvignon
Cabernet Sauvignon

Universally regarded as one of Coonawarra’s greatest wines it continues to win trophies and medals throughout Australia and the world. The wine has a wonderful deep magenta color with a rich nose, redolent of ripe plums, blackberries and hints of dusty oak. The palate is true Coonawarra cabernet - very structured, with layers of black fruits. Very rich with fruitcake complexity and with a lingering finish that is dry and overlaid with fine grain tannins. The wine was barrel fermented and then aged for about 22 months in French oak hogshead (300 liter barrels). Aging potential of 10 - 14 years.

The Malleea
The Malleea

The Malleea by Majella continues the great Australian tradition of Cabernet/Shiraz blends. The ripest parcels of fruit from the oldest vines are fermented gently in Majella’s modern fermentation cellar, and then finished off in new French oak hogsheads. The wine is then aged for another 29 months in these barrels, before bottling in imported fine Italian bottles. It is rich dark magenta in color, with ripe plums, spice and vanillin oak on the nose. The palate is fruit cake complex and layered with fresh berries, black olives and hints of chocolate while dusty tannins enhance the finish. Aging potential is 15-20 years.

55% Cabernet, 45% Shiraz
