Olivier Bernstein Premiers & Grands Crus


Olivier Bernstein has established himself as a new star in Burgundy in a matter of short period of time. His range focuses on six grands crus from the Cote de Nuits: a trio of Gevrey-Chambertin, soecifically Charmes-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Beze; along with Clos de Vougeod, Bonnes Mares and Clos de la Roche. Bernstein comes from a family of music publishers, but left a promising corporate career to study oenology in Beaune. After working harvest at Domaine Rouget, he moved to Roussillon to found his own Domaine, Mas de la Deveze. He returned in Burgundy in 2007 to establish a negociant business. He now manages the vineyard work for all but one of his sources and has managed to buy two of the vineyards he has worked with since the start: Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux and Mazis Chambertin. These vineyards follow the common thread of old vines more than 80 years old in the Mazis. The barrels are made to order by master cooper Stephane Chassin, who comes to taste the new vintage before deciding what type of toasting will suit each individual wine. The 1er and grand cru wines are matured in new wood from the start. This takes place in the new Bernstein headquarters, some marvellous reconditioned old cellars in the heart of Beaune.


Gevrey Chambertin Villages

Grapes come from old vines of 60 years. It's a blending of 2 plots called Carougeot et Epointures. Gevrey Villages is aging in new oak barrels.

Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers

Les Cazetiers 10.07ha with 80 year old vines. A Rich and full color. The nose absolutely leaps out of the glass, with lush dark cherries and some glossy blackberry notes, supported by the perfect mineral thread of the vintage and this vineyard. The fruit is so concentrated that there is no sign of the oak. All this leads to a very suave succulent finish: in short, it is gorgeous. Drink 2018-2026.

Gevrey-Chambertine 1er Cru Les Champeaux

6.67ha with 55 year old vines. The soil is a mix of red and brown earth with the mother rock quite close to the surface. Rich bright purple in color, the stylish and polished bouquet harnesses a delicious explosion of fruit. The fruit on the palate has a sensual component up front then kicks on beautifully to a fine, long, ripe finish. The wine is defined by tremendous length and class, including a fine acid balance as well as notably dense tanins which will ensure longevity. Drink 2018-2024.

Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Lavrottes

The vines here are the youngest in Bernstein’s portfolio however the situation of the vineyard, just beneath Bonnes-Mares, is compelling. The entire vineyard is less than one hectare and Olivier is the only producer to bottle a wine from Les Lavrottes. Dense purple color with floral notes overlaid with a trace of barrel toast. Ripe dark cherry fruit swells on the nose. There is surprising weight to this on the palate with lovely perfume and purity. Overall the wine offers a classical Chambolle-Musigny sensuality. Drink 2017-2022.

Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Blend from plots in both the Charmes and the Mazoyeres-Chambertin parts of the vineyards from vines averaging over 40 years. Glowing imperial purple in color: the nose is discreet at first before swathes of glossy ripe cherry fruit emerge. The texture in the mouth is fine and soft with dark fruit matched by some bright red cherry notes. There is a significant weight of compelling Charmes style fruit here, an exceptionally intense rendition of the vineyard. Drink 2018-2028.

Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Up to 80 year old vines. Rich, deep purple, the nose at first shows power but not too much detail, before the rich dark cherry fruit starts to expand. The wine opens up slowly on the palate to show luxuriant fruit, a very full, multi-layered, mouthful. The wine finishes on a fabulous brisk, nervous intensity. This is a deeply impressive example of Clos de Vougeout with fruit, flesh, density and precision. Drink 2020-2028.

Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Clos de la Roche 16.90ha. 50 year old vines. This wine never displays the deeper colors, but the lighter purple hue is clear and pure. There is a lovely sensual quality to the nose with real finesse. Morello cherry is the nearest fruit. A beautiful mouthful of velvet fruit leads through to a finely structured finish. Drink 2020-2030.

Bonne Mares Grand Cru

15.06ha. Complex terroir with both red clay and a whiter marlstone soil. Vines are 50 years old. 80% whole bunches used for this wine. Fine bright purple with notable depth, the beautifully perfumed nose has none of the astringency which can be associated with whole-bunch vilification. Instead the presence of the stems aerated the vibrant blackcurrant and strawberry fruit, leavening the weight of the wine with a fresh crunch at the finish. A complex, lovely, harmonious wine. Drink 2020-2030.

Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

Mazis-Chambertin 9.10ha. Grapes bought from Les Mazis-Haut blended with Olivier’s own vines in Mazis-Bas, the oldest vines are 80 years old. Very pure, glowing purple color. The nose shows such beautiful precision, it is almost electric. Arguably the most vibrant of the wines with an excellent fruit acid balance and exceptional persistence. It shos less of the puppy fat of the vintage but more sophistication. Absolutely magical on the palate with classical distinction and great persistence. Drink 2020-2032..

Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru

Clos-de-Beze 15.39ha. 60 years old vines. Ripe, stylish, purple, with a beautifully sensual, perfumed nose of dense black fruit, delivering the marvelous sense of grace that this vineyard offers. Again an excellent fruit acid balance with a velvet carpet of dark red and mulberry fruit., leavened by a mineral freshness and a sensationally long finish. Drink 2022-2035
