Château Palmer

Towards the demise of the Napolean era in 1814, Englishman Major General Charles Palmer crossed over to France and using a huge amount of capital, acquired the Chateau Gasque. This was the beginning of Chateau Palmer. The chateau then changed hands to banking family, the Pereire brothers and further development was carried out. However, during the Great Depression of the 1930s, the chateau was relinquished and in 1938 it was bought by a few families from Bordeaux, England and the Netherlands. For these families it was worth the political risk acquiring the Palmer vineyard as they continued aiming for consistent improvement in quality. As a result of this unyielding effort, the wonderful terroir of Palmer bloomed and a magnificent wine was born.

Alter Ego de Palmer
Alter Ego de Palmer (Margaux)

Alter Ego is not a second wine but another expression of the famed vineyards of Chateau Palmer. Alter Ego is always a very lively, fruity and juicy wine. It has subtle aromas of red cherry, smoke and violet infused chocolate leading into soft tannins and supple red fruit flavours. This wine can be thoroughly enjoyed in the few years after bottling. The individuality of this terroir is fully extracted through long barrel aging and the resulting wine has a great depth of body and richness. The intrinsic fruitiness and aroma of the Alter Ego is ensured by the limitation of new barrels to 25-30%.

Château Palmer
Château Palmer (Margaux)

The wine has the classic style of a Margaux as well as the finesse, elegance and concentration born of the unique terroir of Chateau Palmer, that is the gravel stratum of the hill’s summit. The amount of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot used is 47% for both varieties and Petit Verdot is used for the remaining 6%, thus producing a wine with surprisingly complex aromas of fruits, flowers, and spice, with rich body and structure. Long periods of barrel aging is essential in order to draw forth the maximum power of the terroir. Aging is quite slow so it is possible to keep this wine for a long time. The impressive finish that shows the beautiful aroma and complex, rich, elegant and occasionally exotic nuances unfold even more with a few years of aging in the cellar.
