Hugel Vendange Tardive & Sélection de Grains Nobles

These wines have been the Hugel family’s grand specialty for generations. They are made from grapes harvested later than the conventional harvest period when the grapes are beyond fully ripe. Infinitely long term aging in the bottle is possible due to the workings of the botrytis fungus. They are among the most wonderful wines in France.

Riesling Vendange Tardive Riesling Vendange Tardive

This is extremely rare; made with grapes from 40 year old vines in only in their prime years, the result is wonderful. It has flavors of quince and peach preserves, fresh lime, and orange marmalade, then lingers long on honeyed richness, subtle minerality, and mysterious hints of truffle and musk. This classic will also linger in your cellar without diminishing in quality for at least the next dozen years.

This is the Hugel family’s pride and delight. The Hugel family is the pioneer of the Alsace late harvest Vendange Tardive. 4 to 6 weeks after the usual harvest delayed, only overripe grapes from the best vineyard are picked. As a result of this the wine has a characteristic depth and degree of concentration that can develop in the bottle for many more years. It has aromas of rose petal, caraway, and celery seed, offering the palate a rather sweet-sour combination of herbal pungency and honeyed, residually sweet richness. It finishes with impressively lingering rose petal and honey.

In order for this kind of rare wine to be made, there are many contributing factors that must overlap each other; a special vineyard, old vines, complete ripening, a continuing botrytis accelerating morning mist, maximum sunlight and so on. Accordingly, the resulting wine has unbelievable delicacy and complexity and the length of life is almost endless. Orange marmalade, caramelized peach, spiced pear and yellow plum preserves, roses, and honey and white raisin fill the nose. Spectacularly luscious and expansive on the palate, it is honeyed, silken-textured and loaded with juicy fruit.
